” Life of a Giant Mantis In Miniature Drawings’ is an illustrated Digital-book that depicts the life cycle of a praying mantis from the its stages of being an egg and larva to a pupa and an imago and then returning to nature. Just as all life forms, once they are born they must later die, thus a praying mantis, which is an insect, begins as an egg but also must meet its death in the end. Kwon Hyok-do, the author and illustrator, shows the difficult life process of a praying mantis that starts out as an egg and then returns to nature, thus demonstrating the laws of nature. Ten years ago, the author went through a commotion of having 260 larvae that hatched in the middle of the night from an egg sack of a praying mantis, which he discovered and left in his desk drawer. He has written this book based on his experience of raising some of the praying mantes, as well as his detailed longtime observation of them in nature. In addition, he has provided background information, on two facing pages, which shows the special characteristics of the subject with detailed, miniature drawings. The process of miniature illustration requires one to look through a loupe and with an extra fine brush do the illustration for each step by completing it dot by dot. Furthermore, the author and illustrator concentrates on the tip of a brush, looks again and again through a magnifying glass, and checks countless times; all this process is how he created the pictures. A miniature thus completed with such concentration will offer vivid energy that not even photographs can match.

《세밀화로 보는 사마귀 한살이》는 알에서부터 애벌레, 성충을 거쳐 다시 자연으로 돌아가는 사마귀의 한살이를 보여 주는 생태 그림책입니다. 알에서부터 힘겹게 살아가고 살아남았다가 다시 자연으로 돌아가는 사마귀를 보여 주며 권혁도 작가는 담담하게 자연의 섭리를 전합니다. 알려 주고자 하는 정보를 기본으로, 사마귀를 포함한 자연을 바라보는 작가의 생각과 마음이 함께 표현된 것은 이 책의 특징이기도 합니다.
권혁도 작가의 여느 작업이 그러했듯이, 《세밀화로 보는 사마귀 한살이》 역시 직접 관찰하고 기록한 자료를 바탕으로 쓰고 그렸습니다. 작가는 십여 년 전 왕사마귀 알집을 채집해서 책상 서랍에 넣어 두었다가 밤사이 부화한 260여 마리 애벌레들 때문에 한바탕 소동을 겪었습니다. 이 중 일부를 기른 경험과 오랜 시간 발품을 팔며 자연 속에서 관찰한 내용을 바탕으로 이 책을 만들었습니다. 루페(확대경, 돋보기)로 들여다보며 가장 세밀한 붓으로 점 찍듯이 채색해가는 세밀화 작업. 붓끝에 온 신경을 집중하고, 다시 돋보기로 그린 부분을 들여다보면서 확인하는 과정을 수없이 거치면서 작가는 자연을 그렸습니다. 그렇게 완성된 세밀화는 사진으로도 표현되기 힘든 생생함과 에너지를 담고 있습니다.
